2024 Umpire Selections

Paul Lux ( Granada LL )

Selected for 50/70 Intermediate US Western Regionals, Nogales, Arizona. ( July17-25, 2024)

A Bay Area native, Paul began umpiring when (then Granada LL UIC) Dave Mantach asked him to umpire when Paul’s son’s team didn’t have one for a game – a common story. He likes to joke about shin guards with shorts being a great look! Deciding to be the team’s umpire led to being “bit by the bug,” attending the West Region “week-long” umpire training clinic in San Bernardino for the first time, and eventually taking over the UIC role from Dave.

After five years of being UIC and putting four kids through Granada (two becoming umpires), he just never left! Over the years, changing work schedules allowed for different amounts of games per year (never as much as the 112 in his busiest year), he never stopped doing games for Granada and District 57, even after moving to Hayward 10 years ago for work. Paul’s approach is to take the responsibility of umpiring very seriously but to never take himself too seriously. And his motto is, “Have fun!” He says it to every player he encounters, at every plate meeting, and to every umpire he helps develop.

When not umpiring, he is working on his 200+ bonsai trees, playing softball, kayaking with his wife of 32 years, or watching his grandson play soccer and t-ball. Paul is excited for this next opportunity in his umpire journey and promises to represent District 57 well!

REMEMBERING JIM NORTH

CA57 Mourns Passing of Jim North

The CA57 family mourns the passing of long time Little League volunteer Jim North, who passed away unexpectedly September 29 at the age of 60.

Jim was a life-long resident of Dublin, graduating from Dublin High School in 1976.  Jim became active in Dublin Little League with his son Tyler and served over the years as manager, umpire, UIC, and President, continuing his volunteer duties long after his son had finished his Little League career, including serving as a District 57 volunteer umpire for well over a decade.

Jim was an avid sports fan, and passionate about baseball.  He caught the umpiring bug and, until recent injuries prevented him from umpiring, could be found most weekends, and numerous weeknights, behind the plate working DLL and CA57 upper division games.  Even when he was no longer able to physically umpire himself, Jim would be out supporting youth umpires, instructing them in mechanics and how to properly work a game.

Jim was an ardent supporter of youth  sports, and Little League in particular, and worked tirelessly and selflessly to make sure that the youth of CA57 had umpires to work their games.  He will be sorely missed.

Jim is survived by Toni, his wife of 34 years (and original author of the CA57 Scorekeeping guide) and his son Tyler.

Rest in Peace our Friend.
